Navarro Intermediate School Wins Regional H-E-B School Plastic Bag Recycling Challenge

GERONIMO, TX — May 14, 2026 — Navarro Intermediate School is proud to announce its first-place victory in the H-E-B School Plastic Bag Recycling Challenge. The initiative saw students, staff, and local families rally together to divert thousands of plastic bags from landfills.
The accomplishment was recognized when Cheryl Tilton, a partner representative from Seguin H-E-B, visited Central Office to deliver the news to Superintendent Dr. Epley. Navarro Intermediate claimed the top spot in the region by collecting a staggering 10,148 plastic bags.
As a reward for their environmental stewardship, the school was presented with a $300 H-E-B gift card and a commemorative certificate.
The challenge, which encourages schools to promote sustainable habits, was spearheaded by the Navarro Intermediate Student Council. Sponsor Mrs. Shelby Atchley praised the collective effort of the school community.
"We are incredibly proud of our Student Council members for their hard work and dedication in winning the challenge for our region," said Atchley. "This achievement reflects the leadership, teamwork, and commitment to protecting our environment demonstrated by both our students, staff, and their families."
Atchley noted that the project served as a powerful lesson for the student body, proving that "small actions can create a big impact when a community comes together with a shared purpose." By participating in the H-E-B Challenge, Navarro Intermediate has reinforced the profile of a Navarro graduate through values of service, leadership, goal setting, and environmental responsibility.
The $300 gift card will be used to support future student initiatives and campus projects. We are grateful to HEB for their continued support and commitment to education.
